Web Hosting Basics

Everything on the Internet is stored on web server. Web servers are computers or a cluster of computers that store information including, files, images, media, etc for the Internet. Each web server has a unique address. When you enter the address of a website or click on a link your computer sends a message to the web server where the site’s information is stored using the web server’s unique address. Your computer requests the information for the website, the web server responds by sending your computer the information and you are then able to view the site.
As a result, if you are looking to create or own a website, you will need for the site to be hosted on a web server in order for it to by accessible to people through Internet. There are various options based on the size and traffic of the site; however, most sites do not require an entire web server. As a result, web hosting companies allow you to rent space on a web server. Most web hosting providers will have various plan options based on the requirements and size of the site. Fees are generally charged on a monthly or annually basis, but will vary depending on the size and type of the plan.
Before choosing a plan or a web hosting provider, you should consider the content and purpose of your site. This will allow you to discuss the various plan options with an idea of your requirements. The following are key considerations:
1. Will your site consist mainly of text, or will there be a lot of pictures and/or other media files? Please note, movies, music and other media files may use more disk space and bandwidth.
2. Will your site have a large amount of traffic?
3. Will your site have a shopping cart or do you require increased security for any reason?
With this information you should be able to discuss all of your options with your web host company.
